Arriving in Sri Lanka

After a 12 hour trip to Bangkok then a 4 hour trip to Colombo I was finally in Sri Lanka. The heat hits you hard. Like I felt dirty sweaty and yuck instantly. My driver was there to meet me at the airport along with another volunteer was there as her flight had just come in as well. She is from Singapore. He told us there were two more girls he had to pick up before we could leave for kandy but they were only coming in later so without much knowledge in English he drove us to so house where he dropped up and told us he'd be back to pick us up at 4:am (2 and half hours). We were both knakered so we set an alarm and went for a nap. The two of us had to share a single bed but it was okay we were two tired to care. 4:am we were up and ready but the driver never came. It was 2 hours later at 6:30am he arrived to pick us up. With a language barrier between us we never found out why he was so late. The two girls were from the US so the 4 of us left towards Kandy which was a 4 hour drive. The drive was amazing but scarey the same time. There are no road rules in Sri Lanka as well as our driver was a nut. We saw some pretty crazy sights. We drove behind a truck with 2 elephants standing in cages... There were cows on the road and the roads were literally smaller than a one way street but cars managed to somehow squeeze past each other. Half way they we stopped off at a resteraunt thing for breakfast. On the menu was curry and rice and Filo samosas. Not at all what I felt like for breakfast that's the kinda food Sri Lankans have for breakfast. And locals eat there food with there fingers which is just discusting, like, not that hard to put a fork in your hand..? When we arrived in Kandy it was crazy! So busy! Just people everywhere! We continued another 15 minutes through skinny one way streets into these small streets full of forest and paddy fields. And that's where we stopped at our hostel. We were introduced to the owner then taken up stairs and given a bunk bed. There were some girls who had just finished there last day volunteering and tomorrow were heading to the beaches. The girls asked us if we wanted to go to the markets in the city and all of us were keen even though we were all knakered! The toilets here have no toilet paper so we needed to go into town to get toilet paper and some bottled water because you can't drink the water here. We took the public bus into the city which was an experience and a half. other than the girls I am volunteering with I haven't seen any tourists here since I arrived at the Colombo airport. Not very comforting. The markets we're fill of spices teas and lots and lots of fresh fruit. I brought my self some mangoes and. Mangosteens while the girls brought themselves some pairs of hippy pants. Your traditional tourist pants. We took the bus home and just watched a movie because everyone's so tired and jet lagged. I'm excited for all the vounteers to arrive tomorrow. We got told there's gonna be 40 of us. Not sure where everyone's gonna sleep.. The girls here already said that you will become a family with the group because
